Women on the Classics: Emily Wilson in conversation with Charlotte Higgins

November 22, 2017 @ 6:30 pm UTC+0

£6

Women have long been marginalized in the world of Classics, with the study of ancient Greece and Rome being a field dominated by elite white men. But, at long last we are beginning to see an outpouring of translations by female scholars. The first English translation of The Iliad by a woman (Caroline Alexander) came out in 2016, with the first female translation of five of Plutarch’s Roman Lives (by Pamela Mensch) following this year.

Join Associate Professor of Classical Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, Emily Wilson, translator of the first female version of The Odyssey as she speaks to the Guardian’s Charlotte Higgins about the importance of canonical texts being reimagined and reclaimed by women.

THIS EVENT WILL TAKE PLACE IN THE THIRD FLOOR PHILOSOPHY TURRET. ALL TICKETS INCLUDE WINE. BUY ONLINE, IN STORE OR BY PHONING 020 7636 1577
