A leading figure in the emergence of Classical Reception Studies since the 1990s, Wyke is perhaps best known for her pioneering work on ancient Rome on film (Projecting the Past, 1997), but has also published major studies on the history of the image of Julius Caesar , spearheads a worldwide project to preserve and screen classically-themed early silent cinema, and recently directed (with anthropologist Mike Rowlands) UCL’s Centre for Research into the Dynamics of Civilisation (CREDOC).
After her talk Prof Wyke will be in conversation with Prof Paul Cartledge who has written on the popular image of the Spartans, Alexander the Great, and ancient Greece in general; recently author of Ancient Greece: A Very Short Introduction (OUP, 2011), and Democracy: A Life (OUP, 2016).
