Henry Stead (St Andrews): ‘A Defiant Scottish Renaissance’

February 10, 2021 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm UTC+0

A public talk hosted by the Classical Association of Scotland (Edinburgh and SE Centre) and the Classics Department of the University of Edinburgh. The talk will take place via Zoom at 6pm (UTC) on Wednesday 10 February. Register here.

In 2016 Dr Stead found a photo in a Moscow archive. It had been taken in 1952 and alongside a few Soviet writers and Doris Lessing were two figures he did not recognise, one was the Scottish author and social activist Naomi Mitchison (1897-1999) and the other was the Scots poet, classical scholar and former SNP leader, Douglas Young (1913-1973). In this paper, Dr Stead will introduce the classical writings of these two writers, with whom he is now better acquainted, and another Scottish classicist, the radical novelist known to most as Lewis Grassic Gibbon (1901–1935).
