Classical Association 2024 Conference at University of Warwick

The Department of Classics & Ancient History, University of Warwick will host the Classical Association Conference on 22-24 March 2024. The conference will take place on Warwick’s central campus (Oculus and new award-winning Faculty of Arts Buildings), close to the centre of Coventry, with its excellent rail, bus, and road transport links. University accommodation is available for booking on campus and delegates are also welcome to make their own arrangements for off campus accommodation in Coventry, Kenilworth, or Leamington Spa.

Our programme will include a keynote lecture by Yannis Hamilakis (Joukowsky Family Professor of Archaeology and Professor of Modern Greek Studies at Brown University) on Friday evening, on the topic ‘Undoing Monumental Racecraft: The Acropolis Otherwise’.

On Saturday evening, we are excited to host a unique performance by the new CA President, award-winning poet, translator and professor of classical languages, Anne Carson.

Other highlights on Sunday include the inaugural Young Speaker’s Award presentation and a performance of the OctaviaThe exhibition ‘Black Classicists’ will also be displayed in the Atrium of the Faculty of Arts Building throughout the conference.

We are taking advantage of the proximity of the Warwick Arts Centre to offer a film screening workshop run by Maria Wyke, entitled Museum of Dreams: The Classical World in Silent Cinema. Workshops relevant to teaching Classics, Classical Civilisation, Archaeology, and Ancient History in all its rich diversity include sessions focusing upon Teaching with InscriptionsStudent engagement in classical subjects, from school to university; Utilising ancient coins and tokens; Teaching Queer Pasts; Performing and Producing Drama; Teaching in Translation. Delegates will have the opportunity to engage in discussion about the future of the curriculum, via a workshop run by the Classical Association Teaching Board, in collaboration with OCR. Approaches to language teaching will be discussed via workshops on Latin Language Teaching: EDI and course intensity and Interactive Learning Adventures for Classical Languages in the Spatial Metaverse Language-teaching, run by colleagues from the Universidad de La Sabana in Colombia. A full programme of panels and workshops throughout the three days of the conference explore the conference themes:
