The Song of Arms and a Man: Virgil’s Aeneid

February 9, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm UTC+0

The ‘Song of Arms and a Man’ tells the story of Aeneas’ escape from Troy, his stay with Dido and his struggle to fulfil his destiny as founder of Rome. These readings from Virgil’s Aeneid are selective, but tell the whole story of the poem, rarely heard, in a unique presentation of the original verse, echoing the ancient culture of public performance of poetry.

Programme: 2 hours, including an interval

On the 9th of February a special performance of the Aeneid will take place at Reception Room, Wills Memorial Building, organised by The Latin Qvarter in collaboration with the Bristol Classics Hub and the Institute of Greece, Rome, and the Classical Tradition. Step back two thousand years and enjoy Virgil’s beautiful Latin spoken by readers who as singers, including Emma Kirkby and Matthew Hargreaves, have a special talent for conveying classical verse. The outline of the story is presented in English: this is for all, including those new to Latin.
