Staging Greek Drama Today/KCL Greek Play – Euripides’ Medea

February 7, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm UTC+0

KCL GREEK PLAY 2018: EURIPIDES’ MEDEA
7-9 February 2018, 7pm (2.30pm matinees on 7 & 9)
Greenwood Theatre, London Bridge

Euripides’ brutal tragedy is re-imagined in early twentieth century London as a cautionary tale about maligning the marginalised. A play once used to protest for women’s suffrage, this new production celebrates the centenary of that cause’s extraordinary first victory in 1918 while a taking hard look at on-going inequality in the UK today. To mark the sixty-fifth annual Greek Play at King’s College London, ‘Medea’ will be performed in a dynamic combination of original Greek and newly commissioned English translation, offering a unique way to experience the visceral thrill of a classic that continues to haunt the imagination.

Thursday evening’s performance is now sold out, but there is still some availability for Friday evening and limited availability for the other performances.

Each evening’s performance will be preceded by a talk from leading scholars and industry figures:

Wednesday 7 – ‘Staging Greek Drama Today’ (Panel discussion with Dan Orrells, Helen Eastman, Nick Lowe, Lucy Jackson, and ‘Medea’ director Holly Smith)
Thursday 8 – ‘Medea and the “Monstrous Regiment of Women”‘ (Fiona Macintosh, Oxford)
Friday 9 – ‘Seneca’s Medea and Her Afterlife’ (Helen Slaney, Roehampton)

The pre-show talks all begin at 6pm in the Greenwood auditorium and are free to that evening’s ticket holders.

Schools or other educational groups looking to book should email greekplay@kcl.ac.uk directly to arrange this. Teachers accompanying school groups go free!
