Dr Daniel Jew (National University of Singapore) – ‘Ulysses by the Merlion’: Insights into Teaching Greek and Roman History at a Postcolonial City-State’s Oldest University
May 18 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm UTC+0
Daniel Jew graduated with a PhD in Classics (Cambridge), and has gone on to teach two large survey courses in Greek & Roman history at the National University of Singapore (c. 100 students) – likely the first since Singapore’s independence in 1965. In this talk, he shares insights regarding some of the contextual challenges of helping students at a large public university in Singapore make connections and appreciate the relevance of ancient ‘Western’ cities and civilisations – including delivering an entire lecture on pop culture.
